Breaking Records
This past weekend, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith opened to record-breaking business around the world. In the United States, the film broke every opening record in the books:
- Midnight showings on May 19 grossed $16.9 million, the biggest midnight ever
- The first day gross of $50 million was the biggest single day in movie history (beating the previous record of $44.5 million grossed by Shrek 2 on a Saturday)
- The film earned more than any other film in its first 2 days ($83.8 million)
- More than any film in its first 3 days ($124.7 million)
- More than any film in its first 4 days ($158.8 million, beating the previous 4-day record of $134 million held by Matrix Reloaded)
At $158.8 million, Revenge of the Sith grossed more in its first 4 days than Spiderman did in its first 5 days. It also significantly outgrossed the opening 4-day tallies for Episode I ($83.7 million) and Episode II ($110 million).
The film's international gross of $145.4 million broke the opening weekend record overseas as well.
Worldwide Gross for Episode III is an astounding $304.2 million after only 4 days.
