Congratulations to My Mommy!
Today is my mom's official day of retirement! Congrats Mommy!
My mom & dad met in nursing school in Dagupan City, when they were teens. In fact, for you Canadians out there, their best friends are Carmen & Pablo Poquiz who live in Surrey. That's where they all met. I think the anatomy room of their nursing school had some late night visitors since they weren't allowed to date other students. I'm not kidding either.
So, at 19, my mom becomes part of the 60s brain drain and moves to Canada to start her nursing career. My father, on the other hand, goes to Connecticut. Being apart, my mother started dating a local Canuck. My mom's roommate loved my dad so much that she decided to be sneaky and called me dad to tell him that he better do something quick or lose her.
So, what did he do? He flew to Canada and they got married! They ended up in California and have been RNs in various cities throughout Southern California. They went from having milk crates and couches found on sidewalks, as their furniture...to becoming a well-established middle class family.
Their sacrifices have given my brother and myself so many opportunities in our lifetime. I am forever indebted to them.
And although today is my mom's official last day, she's calling in sick. She said she doesn't want any parties and doesn't want to cry. She already warned her supervisor that she was going to do that. I wish she would go, so her friends could give her a proper sendoff....but that's my mom.
Mom, now it's your time to rest. As the saying goes, "Today is the first day of the rest of your Life". Congratulations to you. Big Hugs and Smooches!
-Mariciel, Muriet, Mur, Maria Cielo, Baket....and whatever names you called me throughout the years

Hey! My mom moved to Canada as a nurse in the 60's too! What part of Canada did she live in? If it was in Victoria or Vancouver, there's a good chance she may know my mom. Congrats to her!!
What's your mom's name and I'll ask her.
that's a great story!! i'm sure her coworkers will find some way to give her a proper sendoff, even if it doesn't happen at work!
