Salvation Army

It took us an hour to get back to our hotel. On the way back, we saw an 888 number, flashing on the freeway, for shelter information. Rich called to see where we can drop off the items we brought with us. The number was a central answering service to direct all calls related to the evacuees. They actually told Rich that they were no longer accepting donations for the next few days because they didn't have enough people to sort out everything that they were getting. We were so disappointed but still determined to drop off the goods.

We decided to go to Kelly AFB and take a chance. I asked the concierge for directions and she mentioned that they had a bin in the hotel where the bellhop can drop it off for us. It was very tempting to say ok, just for the convenience. But after talking to Rich, we decided that we still wanted to go and drop it off ourselves.

We didn't want to get rejected because the items weren't sorted. I actually brought 10 trash bags with me just so we can take our suitcases home. So, we sorted everything out: medical supplies, clothing, toiletries, toys, perishables, baby items, books & magazines, and elderly adult items (depends).

The AFB was only 15 minutes away from the hotel. On the way to the Salvation Army, we drove past the shelter. There were outhouses lined up outside, makeshift tents set up for what we believe to be medical needs, and warehouses full of donations. We got there around 7 and there was a continuous flow of cars dropping off donations. It was really good to see. They told us that they were only taking volunteers from 8 to 8. Since it was almost 8 and we were super tired from spelunking, we decided not to volunteer that day.

We went back to the hotel, got dinner, then went swimming to relax our sore muscles. They have a man made river and innertubes that take you around the hotel.

It was really nice since we were the only ones in the pool since it was 9pm. After that we headed off to the hot tub to really relax our muscles. It was a soothing way to end such a strenuous day.
